Should I get Insurance on my Removal and/or Storage?

If you are moving house and you’re considering hiring a professional removalist, or need to downsize and store some of your things, you may be thinking to yourself, ‘do I need to get insurance?’  The short answer to that is – it depends on you and your families’ needs. 

Removals unfortunately are not a perfect world, so here at Total Care Movers & Storage, we offer a range of different insurance options for your local or interstate move, as well as for storage. Although every precaution is taken to ensure that your goods are moved and stored safely, accidents can and do happen. 

If you have a home and contents insurance policy already, we recommend you check with your provider as you may be covered for a house removal already. If you don’t have an existing insurance policy already, and you would like to learn more, some of the insurance options we provide at TCM are: 

In Transit / Marine Transit Insurance (not full cover)

We want to begin by letting you know that when moving with us at Total Care Movers & Storage, you do have a basic level of insurance cover. In accordance with the Australian Furniture Removals Association (AFRA,) TCM is covered by In Transit and Marine Transit Insurance. This means that if your goods are damaged or lost during transit, that they will be covered. Although you do have a basic level of cover with Transit insurance, this does not mean full coverage. 

To what extent am I covered using In Transit insurance?

  • Coverage if truck is in an accident or rollover
  • Weather related incidents
  • Coverage if the truck is broken into or stolen
  • Coverage if the truck is fire damaged 
  • Coverage if the truck is involved with damage on other assets

The Big 5 Insurance 

As professional removalists, we understand that your household goods are very important, but at times, some items are more important than others. If you think you will only need to cover some of your household items, this level of cover may be for you. At Total Care Movers & Storage, we offer The Big 5 Insurance package, allowing you to cover 5 of your most treasured items – up to a value of $10,000. One of our TCM values is to offer ‘peace of mind,’ that is to make your house move as stress free as possible. Silver Cover (Market Value)

If you decide that Silver Cover if for you, your household items will be insured at market value. This means if anything is damaged during your professional house removal, the item will be covered at the estimated value the item currently has in the market.  

For example, your fridge was damaged during a removal and you are covered by Silver Cover – the amount covered will depend on the date of purchase, brand, and current market value of the fridge.

Gold Cover (Replacement Cost)

When you choose Gold Cover for your move, your goods are insured at replacement value. This means that in the event something is damaged during a removal, the item will be replaced.

For example, your fridge was damaged during your professional removal and you have purchased Gold Cover – your fridge will be replaced depending on a suitable replacement that currently sells.
