Moving interstate during COVID

Moving interstate is challenging at the best of times and, now with COVID, border restrictions and lockdowns, it is even more complicated! But thankfully removalists are considered an ‘essential service’ by each State Government and are able to move your goods interstate and locally.

Summer is the peak season for removals, and now that governments are lifting some restrictions there is a back log of moves to complete. In fact, more and more people are considering packing up and moving, either to find more reliable work during the pandemic, or to a larger home with room for an office to enable “work from home” arrangements. With lockdowns looming, many are choosing to leave their apartments in the city for larger blocks in the suburbs. With the global pandemic, real estate agents are reporting more and more people fast-tracking their dreams of moving interstate. Many are making lifestyle changes and moving to country or coastal areas in order to enjoy less dense living and avoid close contact by developing a greater appreciation for the outdoors.

With so much demand in the removals industry, if you are planning on moving you must make contact with a reputable interstate removals company such as Total Care Movers as soon as possible so you can secure a date. For most people, a moving date is not flexible. If you have a lease ending or if you previously sold or purchased a home with an upcoming closing date, it’s important that you have access to the critical services that can allow you to relocate. While cities and states across the country have needed to temporarily close “non-essential” businesses, moving is generally considered essential and moving service providers are currently operating in all states.

Needless to say, we live in uncertain times and further restrictions and lockdowns could impact your next interstate move. If this happens, there are a number of exemptions offered by state governments allowing people to move to their new permanent residence locally, interstate or internationally where their current residence is no longer available locally (ie – due to sale or lease end etc) and where relevant have the approved border passes to do so. It is also recommended you source a “proof of residence” which allows you to move to your new house during a lockdown.

But it can get tricky. If you decide to move interstate during border closure, your belongings can cross state borders when you move home, but you cannot follow suit by road. If you enter a state from a hotspot you must travel by air, and you must spend 14 days in hotel quarantine. You will also need to enquire about how to best move your pets by contacting an interstate pet transport service.

Regardless, of whether there is a health emergency or not it is still a smart idea to ensure all your furniture is clean. Ensuring that your furniture is free of dust and dirt, will guarantee that your new abode is not dirtied before you can even enjoy it! In the case of our current health crisis it is best to thoroughly clean furniture and surfaces with disinfectant sprays and wipes. We are still unsure as to how long Covid-19 cells can survive on surfaces and under what conditions they flourish. Therefore, it is better to be safe than sorry. Providing disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer on the day of your move is also another way to ensure your furniture stays as free of germs as possible.

Ensuring you book a reputable removals company is paramount in tumultuous times such as these. It is understandable that people want to know how their family will be protected should they decide to move. The Australian Furniture Removals Association (AFRA) has put in place strict industry regulations that its members must adhere to. These rules protect not only the removals workers on the job but also those they are moving. By booking with a certified AFRA member, such as Total Care Movers, you can be certain that strict health and safety guidelines are being followed.
